Well, I Was Wrong

I thought that the underdog Arizona Cardinals would be able to pull this one out. At the end though, the refs helped give the Pittsburgh Steelers their 6th Super Bowl victory, setting a new record for titles.

It wasn't that the Cardinals didn't go all out to try and get it done. They came back from 13 down to take a 3 point lead with less than 3 minutes to play. But Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes helped lead the Steelers downfield to get the go ahead touchdown with under 40 seconds to go. Or did they?

While I don't have the same great technology at home that the officiating crew does in the stadium, I have to honestly say that Holmes did not make that catch inbounds. Did he get one foot down? Yes, but it looks like the second foot was on the bottom of his first foot and never actually touched down inbounds. Could the Steelers still have scored there? Possibly, after all it would have only been third down. But there is a chance that the Cardinals hold them to a field goal also. If that was the only problem in the last 3 minutes it would be one thing. That wasn't the case.

On the ensuing Cardinals drive, Kurt Warner was dancing around, trying to find an open man and in while stepping forward, Warner was hit from behind by a Steeler lineman, as his arm was going forward. The refs rule it a fumble, the second time they had done so this game against Warner, but this time it was during the final 2 minutes of the game and so the review would have to be initiated by the booth. And despite it being the biggest game of the season, they didn't bother to review, at all. I'm not sure why that is, but they decided that it wasn't worth it. I'm not sure how one comes to that conclusion, but they did.

So congrats to the Steelers for winning the Super Bowl, even if you could have easily had lost it if the refs had actually watched the game.

Florida wins the National Championship

With their 24-14 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators won their second BCS title in the last 3 years and makes you wonder 3 things.

1. Where would Notre Dame be if they have ponied up the money for Urban Meyer instead of Charlie Weiss?

2. Did the game hurt Sam Bradford's draft stock?

3. How does a team not draft Tim Tebow and give him a shot at QB in the NFL?

I'm not Mel Kiper or Todd McShay, but I still look at Tebow and wonder why would some team draft him with the thought of moving him to a H-Back type or Safety and not just give him an opportunity to play QB? I know that he's undersized and doesn't have the strongest arm of the possible QBs that would be eligible in the draft. But when you look at players like JaMarcus Russell, who has been a bust so far, Ryan Leaf, who was one of the biggest, of not the biggest QB bust of all time, those guys were the prototype, strong arms, football smarts. But you have to wonder sometimes if those players have the ability to drive their team or will their team to victory, like Tebow has done in the past 3 years. I'm don't know if he'll be a great QB, but I can't imagine not spending a 4th rounder to just give him a shot.

Bradford is one of those prototype QB's, size, arm strength and ability to read defenses. But the offense he runs isn't exactly a pro-style offense and doesn't indicate in any possible way whether he's even close to being ready to run a team. Their offense calls a formation, and then once they lineup, he looks over to the sidelines for adjustments and audibles. He's not going to have that opportunity in the pros to look over. He's going to need to make those decisions himself. Is it because he's not able to decipher anything himself, or do the coaches feel they need to control all that? Something we won't know until a team gives him a shot on Sundays.

Lastly, I'm not a Charlie Weiss hater like a lot of Notre Dame fans and I feel that he's done an ok job so far for the fighting Irish. But with 2 BCS titles in 3 years at Florida, one has to wonder what kind of success he might have at a place like Notre Dame, which is more of a football destination than the Gators were. Would he win a national title? No one could know, but I have a feeling that if Notre Dame could redo everything, Urban Meyer might not be leading the Gators out of any tunnels.
