Cubs "lose" out on Matsui

I wouldn't call it a loss though. ESPN 1000 in Chicago, more specifically Bruce Levine, is reporting that 2B Kazuo Matsui is going to sign a 3 year deal with the Houston Astros. If I could, I'd be doing cartwheels right now. This was a terrible idea to begin with and thankfully the Astros prevented them from making the mistake. Matsui is not worth anywhere near the dollars nor the years the Cubs and Astros are offering him. The Cubs need left handed bats, but they don't need bad contract to handcuff them. I personally want to thank Astros GM Ed Wade for making this move and prevent Cubs Jim Hendry from making a bone-headed move. Thank you.

I'd much rather have them go after a lefty to play RF. OF Kosuke Fukudome is still weighing whether he wants to remain in Japan or move to the United States. There was some buzz about the Cubs being interested in LF Carl Crawford from the Tampa Bay Rays. Either of those would be better additions than Matsui. Hopefully we'll hear word soon on what Fukudome is planning on doing, maybe during the Winter Meetings next week.
