Can't Forget the Southside

Well, as a Chicago Cubs fan, I can but I would guess my friend Ron would be mad if I didn't talk about the Chicago White Sox for a bit. Having lost out on CF Torii Hunter, there was talk that the Sox would make a play for 3B Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins before he was picked up by the Detroit Tigers. The Sox offer was to include 3B Josh Fields, Ps Gio Gonzalez, (who they have traded once and reacquire), John Danks and Gavin Floyd. Now, this isn't a terrible trade, but I don't think it comes anywhere near what other teams were throwing out there. 2 years ago, this would be a good package as at that time, Danks was a top pitching prospect for the Texas Rangers and Floyd was one of the Philadelphia Phillies' top pitching prospects. But now they aren't even close. Despite that, at least GM Kenny Williams was trying. It looks like the Sox will turn towards Aaron Rowand to help fill their CF vacancy. It's thought that the Sox have offered him 4 years, $13 million per. He's looking for a 5 year deal, but I don't think that anyone is going to give him that. At least I hope not. That's a lot of money for someone who is solid, not good or great. That would be almost as much if not more than what the Boston Red Sox gave RF J.D. Drew last year. And if you think over the next 4 years Rowand will be more valuable than Drew, then you're nuttier than Ozzie Guillen.

Also on the Sox radar is OF David DeJesus from the Kansas City Royals. The Royals just signed RF Jose Guillen, so they have an extra OF or two and some to spare. Not sure what they would be looking for from the Sox. I would say starting pitching, but the Sox don't have much to offer.
