Soriano Hurts Calf

In today's 9-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano hurt his calf doing his customary hop on a Ken Grifey, Jr flyout. The Cubs now have a question to answer and it's not why the hell is Soriano doing that stupid hop in the first place, though that's a good one too. The question is, what is manager Lou Pinella going to do about his lineup if Soriano misses some games?

Now, you would expect Soriano to miss at least one game because of this and probably a second. They haven't said the severity of the injury, but a trip to the DL right now isn't out of the question. But if he misses a couple of days, what is Pinella going to do? With the team they have right now, the best lineup would probably be:

1. Ryan Theriot SS
2. Kosuke Fukudome RF
3. Derek Lee 1B
4. Aramis Ramirez 3B
5. Reed Johnson LF
6. Geovanny Soto C
7. Mark DeRosa 2B
8. Felix Pie CF

Unfortunately, Pinella likes to out think himself. And his most likely lineup for Wednesday game will have 2B Mike Fontenot leading off, Theriot hitting second, DeRosa hitting 7th and playing LF. Its bad enough that the Cubs have Theriot playing everyday because they have no one better in their system to play SS, but to stick Fontenot in the leadoff spot was just be horrible. Does no one remember the terrible August and September he had in 07? What about Fontenot says, I should be an everyday player? Its not his average glove. It definitely isn't his very subpar bat. But this could all be for not. For all I know, Pinella will stick Daryle Ward out there
Wednesday night. Ugh.
